[ARCHIVED] Resolution Solutions

hiking trails and swimmer - resolution solutions article

If you’re looking for that perfect New Year’s resolution, check out the array of opportunities right here in Poway. Whether your goal is to make a move in a new direction or simply get moving, you don’t have to travel far to achieve something new in 2022.

Get Fit

It’s no secret that Poway has some of the best hiking trails in the county. With 78 miles of trails, there’s something for everyone to explore - no matter how far you want to go or how steep a hill you want to climb. If you don’t want to hike alone, join in on the Fun and Fitness hiking series at Blue Sky Ecological Reserve on Mondays through February 14.

But hiking isn’t the only fitness option in Poway.

The pool at the Poway Community Swim Center is maintained at 80 to 84 degrees for comfortable swimming year-round. Annual maintenance is being completed this week but starting Jan. 10 the pool will be operating on its Winter schedule, which includes Saturday hours.

Whether you’re 7 or 70, Poway offers an array of classes that will get you moving, including: ballet, hip hop, Pilates, POUND and tap. Free classes for older adults - including line dancing and yoga - are offered at the Mickey Cafagna Community Center.

Start Fresh

If you’re cleaning your refrigerator and pantry to get a fresh start in the New Year, be sure to use your green cart for organics recycling. Free disposal of household toxins and electronic waste is available at the Household Hazardous Waste Collection Facility. (Proof of residency is required.)

Make Memories with Your Family

If you’re looking to spend time with your family, look no farther than an outing to one of Poway’s 22 parks and recreation centers. The Poway Community Services Guide lists upcoming special events as does the city’s website

Winter Festival makes an enchanting return to Poway Community Park on Jan. 7 and 8. Find out why Poway calls it the #BestWeekendEver! Between racing your sled down the snow hill, taking a spin on the synthetic ice rink, and cozying up by the campfire with a s’more, it’s the perfect time for fun, laughter, and memories.

The annual Youth Fishing Derby and family campout at Lake Poway is coming up quickly Feb. 4 and 5. Friday evening includes a free fishing seminar and pizza; Saturday’s fishing derby is free and open to anglers 15 and younger.

All aboard! Take a weekend ride on the Poway Midland Railroad at Old Poway Park. California history comes alive throughout the park and the farmer’s market on Saturday is one of the best around.

Get Involved in Your Community

It takes hundreds of volunteers each year to put on all of Poway’s great events and programs. There are opportunities for volunteers to help our community during an emergency, take care of our trails, share the history of our community with others and much more. There is even a teen volunteer program that provides community service experience for Poway’s youths.
