Applications are now being accepted to fill an unscheduled vacancy on Poway’s Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee. This position is open to Poway residents, and the term is through Dec. 31, 2026.

The purpose of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee is to act in an advisory capacity to staff working on park, recreation, and community service projects by participating in meetings, supporting research and analysis efforts, and providing input and recommendations at the direction of the Poway City Council.

Poway is divided into eight street maintenance zones and completes work in one zone each year.  This year work is being completed in Zone 1, which includes streets north and east of Espola Road from the city limits to south of Lake Poway Road. 

April through June is when crews take care of the asphalt repairs identified through an earlier walkthrough. This includes grinding and deep patching approximately 5,000 tons of asphalt a year. Work requires limited lane closures that change daily as repairs are completed. Police, fire and emergency medical vehicles, and residents will have access at all times during construction.  

Message signs will be placed to notify motorists of current road work information 24 hours prior the road work begins. Please watch for upcoming construction signage for exact times of work. 

The city maintains 165 miles of roads (which is equal to driving from here to Yuma, Arizona), with roughly 20 miles in each zone. Poway’s pavement management system ensures the city budgets the money needed for the project and minimizes the cost by keeping the city’s 4.8 million square feet of pavement in good condition.

The community is invited to learn more about the Public Safety Element Update at this open-house style meeting on Thursday, April 16 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Staff from Planning, Engineering, Public Works, Fire, and Sheriff's department, will have displays and handouts focused on safety issues such as wildfire, evacuation routes, flood hazards, and hazardous mitigation projects. The meeting is in Oak Hall East of the Mickey Cafagna Community Center, 13094 Civic Center Drive, Poway 92064. 

This meeting is regarding the General Plan Amendment (GPA) 26-0001 adopting the City of Poway Safety Element. This is an amendment to the Safety Element of the General Plan, initially approved by the City Council in 1983 (GPA93-01), with a major General Plan Update and Master Environmental Assessment in 1991. The City of Poway Safety Element, which is part of the City’s General Plan, defines goals, policies, and strategies which will guide the City. By State law, a City’s Safety Element must be updated in order to periodically assess the changing safety needs of the community and establish an action plan to address these needs to further the goals and policies of the City’s General Plan.
