Poway firefighters and San Diego Sheriff's Deputy Tony Bernal were recognized at the May 8 Poway City Council meeting for their heroic actions that saved the life of a three-week-old infant.
On the morning of November 27, a medical call came in for the Poway Station 1 crew and they arrived on scene to find Deputy Bernal performing infant CPR on a baby boy. Crews immediately asked the deputy to carry the infant (while doing compressions) into the ambulance. On the way to the hospital he continued compressions while three paramedics started additional life-saving measures. The team was able to resuscitate the infant before they arrived.
“This is definitely a proud moment for me,” said Poway Fire Chief Jeff Chumbley introducing the first responders. “We are grateful for their professionalism and leadership.”
