Donna Kaptain, a 35-year resident of Poway, is passionate about Old Poway Park.
“It’s the heartbeat of our community, with its character and style,” she said.
A volunteer with the Poway Valley Gardening Club, Donna has channeled her self-described “type A personality” honed from a career in the corporate world into planning and executing projects around the park.
Her most recent project was new landscaping around the Old Poway Park welcome sign at the corner of Midland Road and Temple Street. She worked with Scott Angeli, parks maintenance worker, to bring her ideas to life. From design to digging holes, Parks Trails & Maintenance Manager Frank Quijada said Donna was a rock star throughout the process. She went the extra step to brighten the area by painting the wood trim on the park sign.
This isn’t Donna’s first DIY improvement at Old Poway Park. She organized a donation of birdhouses around the park, installed pavers in front of the Nelson House and the sidewalk in front of the Rose Room. She also planted succulents donated by garden club members around the park flagpole.
