Poway announced Captain Nancy Blanco has been assigned to lead the San Diego Sheriff’s Poway Station.
“Captain Blanco knows our Poway community well,” said Poway City Manager Chris Hazeltine, “She once worked here as a sergeant and lived here as a resident. She knows that public safety is our number one priority and is committed to keeping Poway the safest city in our county.”
Blanco started her career with the San Diego Sheriff’s department as a citizen volunteer in the 1990s. She accepted a position as a sworn deputy in 2000, and in 2008 was awarded Deputy of the Year for saving her partner’s life during an altercation.
She worked in patrol, community-oriented policing, and supervisory roles (including here in Poway) as she promoted through the ranks of sergeant and lieutenant. She also worked for the Narcotics Task Force, an integrated task force comprised of officers from various federal, state and local agencies.
In 2022, Blanco was promoted to the rank of captain and assigned to the Sheriff’s Human Resources Bureau. Blanco and her staff were responsible for recruiting and hiring all positions within the department. The opportunity to lead the Poway station opened up when Poway’s former captain, Karla Menzies, was promoted to commander. She now oversees the Sheriff’s investigations division, including major crimes, narcotics and gangs, and the Regional Crime Laboratory.
“I look forward to continuing the strong relationship we have in Poway between community members, the city and the Sheriff’s department,” said Blanco.
