[ARCHIVED] Trio of Community Heroes Celebrated at Oct. 4 Council Meeting

Bryce Greschke, Tony Rubino and Sue Herndon

A trio of community heroes were celebrated at the Oct. 4 Poway City Council meeting.

Deputy Mayor John Mullin presented a heartfelt proclamation recognizing long-time community activist Sue Herndon. Sue, who was one of the top real estate agents in Poway, has volunteered for and provided leadership to countless organizations and special events.

“Sue’s willingness to give her time, money and boundless energy to worthwhile causes seems limitless,” said Mullin during the presentation. “Her dedication and tireless commitment to doing good for others and her community has been a true inspiration.”

Because Sue was not able to attend in person (she was watching online at home), Tony Rubino – her friend and often partner in good deeds – accepted the proclamation on her behalf. What Tony didn’t know is that the council was not only proclaiming October 4 as Sue Herndon Day in the City of Poway, it was proclaiming it Tony Rubino Day as well. A surprised Tony was recognized for his long list of contributions including dedicating more than 20 years of his life to enhancing the lives of the developmentally disabled community.

Public Works Director Eric Heidemann also recognized Bryce Greschke, the department’s Stormwater division Supervisor, for stopping at the scene of a serious traffic accident on Espola Road on his way to work the morning of July 5. He helped get the driver of a pool service truck to safety as the vehicle caught on fire, and tended to the driver, rinsing chemicals from his face and upper extremities. Bryce then coordinated with his division to clean up the area so that the chemicals did not enter the storm drain.

“We have high expectations of our staff,” said Heidemann. “We expect our employees to do the right thing when nobody is looking; we expect our folks to provide exceptional customer service at all times. What Bryce did was above and beyond our expectations. He helped save this man’s life!”
