At the April 2 council meeting, the Poway City Council approved the employment agreement for Chris Hazeltine to become Poway’s new city manager. Hazeltine, who has more than 30 years of local government experience, was selected following a highly-competitive nationwide recruitment. He was the unanimous choice of the Council. He currently serves as the parks and recreation director for the City of Carlsbad, responsible for the administration and management of a $28 million annual operating budget, a $40 million capital improvement projects budget and the oversight of 56 full-time and 300-plus part-time employees.
Throughout the interview process, city councilmembers were impressed with Hazeltine’s experience managing department operations, budgets, as well as major capital projects.
“As the council evaluated the city’s current work plan and projects, as well as issues on the horizon, Chris emerged as the best candidate to lead Poway into the future,” said Poway Mayor Steve Vaus. “We are excited to welcome him to our City of Poway team!”
In Carlsbad, Hazeltine oversees the maintenance and operation of nearly 400 acres of developed parkland and 600 acres of open space, as well multiple community centers, pools and a senior center. He has played an active role in Carlsbad’s development process, ensuring new projects provide adequate open space, parks and recreation facilities.
“I am beyond excited to be joining such a well-managed and high functioning organization,” said Hazeltine. “I look forward to working with the community, city council, and staff, to help Poway continue its tradition of providing excellent public service.
Prior to joining Carlsbad in 2011, he served as the parks and recreation director for the City of Encinitas. He has also worked for the City of Oceanside. Hazeltine graduated from San Diego State University with a bachelor’s degree in recreation administration and earned a master’s degree in organizational leadership from Point Loma Nazarene University.
The city council began its search for a new city manager in late 2018 when City Manager Tina White announced her retirement. Her last day with Poway is May 2. Hazeltine’s first day is expected to be May 6.
