[ARCHIVED] Tips to Help Prevent Theft from Vehicles During this Holiday Season

theft-from-car-TS

In addition to being an increase in package thefts during the holidays, there are also an increase in thefts from vehicles - both in and around your home and when you are out and about. Here are some tips to help you prevent theft from your vehicle(s) this holiday season:

  1. Make sure your vehicles are locked and secured at all times when your vehicle is not in use. Most thefts from vehicles occur when the vehicle is parked in the driveway or on the street in front of the house and is left unlocked. Thieves routinely walk through neighborhoods checking for unlocked cars since they are easy targets. Target-harden your vehicle by having your car locked and secured at all times.
  2. Make sure there is nothing visible from your vehicle windows as you exit the vehicle. Thieves look for backpacks, purses, wallets, cell phones, gym bags and briefcases for valuables. Even a sweater or jacket might be tempting for them. Remember, if it is valuable to you, it'll be valuable to them. If it's of value to you, bring it in with you at the end of the day.
  3. If you are shopping, make sure you are placing your gifts and packages in the trunk of your car. Be aware of your surroundings, and check for people who may be watching you place your items in your car. If you need to go back into a store to do more shopping, it's best to take a lap around the block and park in a different spot away from where you were originally to make it seem you have left.
  4. Leave no trace. Remove items like charging cables, connection docks, spare change and clothing from your vehicle. These items may make your vehicle a target for someone to break in, thinking there are other items available in the vehicle. If your glove compartment can be locked using the ignition key, consider locking items that fit in there.
  5. Park in busy, well-lit and well-travelled areas. Thieves do not like attention brought on them, so they choose their targets carefully.

If you are a victim of a theft from your vehicle, please contact the Sheriff's Department at (858) 565-5200 before posting anything on social media channels, such as Nextdoor.
