[ARCHIVED] City Hosts Oct. 4 Forum on Water Rates

The City of Poway is hosting a Water Rates Educational Forum on Wednesday, Oct. 4 at 6:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers, 13325 Civic Center Drive in Poway.

The City recognizes that setting water rates is a complex issue. This forum gives water customers an opportunity to learn more about where Poway gets its water and what influences water rates, as well as ask questions ahead of the annual water rates hearing process.

“There’s a lot to take into consideration when we set water rates,” Assistant City Manager Wendy Kaserman said. “It’s not as simple as supply and demand. We’re at the end of a long supply chain and we don’t have control over the cost of the water we purchase. There’s also the cost of maintaining and replacing our infrastructure, which is key to ensuring a safe and reliable water supply for our customers.”

A short presentation will be given on how rates are set, plus attendees can walk through displays that share background information on our water system and the water rate process. The forum is expected to last about an hour and staff will be available to answer questions.

The City Council workshop on water rates is set for Tuesday, Oct. 17 as part of its regularly scheduled council meeting at 7 p.m. Meeting agendas are posted seven days in advance — go to “Council Meetings” on the poway.org website.
