Emergencies happen. How you prepare and how you respond makes a difference. Here are a few tips to help you stay informed and prepared for the next disaster.

This is the county’s “reverse 911” emergency notification system and the City of Poway’s primary resource for contacting you in an event that needs your immediate attention, such as an evacuation due to fires. All landlines are automatically a part of this database, but by registering your email address and mobile phone number, you won’t miss a notification if you’re away from home.

Your family may not be together when disaster strikes – how will you reunite? The SD Emergency App walks you through interactive checklists to help you create your emergency plan and build an emergency supplies kit. And, when disaster strikes the SD Emergency App will keep you and your family informed with emergency updates, interactive emergency maps and shelter locations.  


Build a kit. Make a plan. Be informed. This comprehensive website developed by the local Red Cross includes disaster preparedness tips and mobile app resources that will help you prepare for disasters and get help in the event of one.

The Humane Society’s website offers a step-by-step guide to mapping out how to plan for your animals’ care before, during and after a disaster.  

Keep Connected with the City of Poway

Know how to get information specific to your community during emergencies of all scopes and sizes. Here are the city’s top resources for keeping residents and businesses informed:

  • Nextdoor. The city uses Nextdoor to share information when there’s an issue or situation that affects Poway residents. As a public agency, the city can tailor messages to select neighborhoods or the entire communities. During emergencies, Nextdoor (as well as Twitter) will be your most updated source for news about road closures, impacted neighborhoods and more.
  • Twitter. Twitter is one of the quickest methods for getting the word out during “breaking news” situations. In the event of a disaster or other emergency situation, the city will continuously post updates on its Twitter account @cityofpoway.  You don’t need to be a Twitter user to follow along. Just click on the Twitter icon at the top of the website and search @cityofpoway.
  • Facebook. Facebook is the world’s most used social media platform, and its accessibility makes it a valuable resource for getting the word out during an emergency. If you’ve signed up to follow the city on Facebook, make sure you select to receive notifications from the page so that you can keep up-to-date with information as it’s posted.
