“12 Days of Festivities” for Poway older adults kicks off Dec. 4 and includes crafts, movies, wellness activities, special lunches and the popular Rock the Drop New Year’s Eve afternoon party.
“12 Days” is funded through San Diego Seniors Community Foundation (SDSCF), with support from the Friends of Poway Seniors. The program debuted last year after receiving a No Senior Alone for the Holidays grant from the SDSCF.
“These grants address the pressing issue of social isolation among older adults, particularly during the holiday season, a time when feelings of loneliness can become especially acute,” said Junne Esguerra, SDSCF Director of Programs. “By providing these grants, SDSCF empowers local organizations to create opportunities for seniors to connect, celebrate, and experience the joy of the holidays.”
Last year Karen Bossart attended every event at the Mickey Cafagna Community Center and said that this is the first time in a long time she is looking forward to the holidays.
“I went out and bought a little tree, I purchased my socks and hat and sweater, and I even bought Christmas lights to decorate my walker,” Karen said.
Most of the 12 events throughout December and January are free; standard fees apply for the meal program events. Attendees who turn in their punch card at the end of festivities are eligible to win prizes.
