[ARCHIVED] After the Storm

Public Works crews respond to flooding on Twin Peaks Road

Poway was spared from the widespread storm damage that impacted other parts of the county on Monday, but the intense morning rain did lead to flooding along westbound Twin Peaks Road. Public Works crews braved the elements to clear water that backed up around a storm drain and Sheriff’s deputies set up a temporary closure between Ted Williams Parkway and Pomerado Road so motorists could safely detour until the water receded.

Poway's annual channel moving program plays a key role in keeping low-lying areas in the city from flooding. Each year, Public Works Stormwater division removes overgrown invasive (non-native) vegetation along about 5 ½ miles of creeks and channels. The program is done in compliance with multiple state and federal agency requirements with the end goal of protecting life and property from potential flooding in low lying areas and reducing fire fuels.

With drier days in the immediate forecast, now’s a good time to revisit your winter storm preparedness. Before the next storm, take time to:

  • Inspect, clean, and repair rain gutters, roof tops, and yard drains.
  • Clear private drainage channels and brow ditches of landscape material and debris.
  • (When rain is in the forecast) Place plastic sheeting, secured with sandbags, over sections of disturbed soil to prevent erosion.

Revisit your family’s emergency plans, including:

  • Building a disaster supply kit for your home and “go bag” to take with you
  • Making a plan for evacuating when you are home, as well as meeting up if you are not home when an emergency happens
  • Keeping informed by registering for Alert San Diego, downloading the SD Emergency App and the Poway CityApp
