[ARCHIVED] Poway Implements Mandatory Water Use Restrictions to Meet State Requirements

Beginning June 8, the City of Poway will implement mandatory water use restrictions to meet state water conservation requirements. Landscape watering will be limited to no more than three days a week between the hours of 6 p.m. and 10 a.m., with customers choosing their own watering days.

Although the water conservation measures will be consistent with level 2 drought actions, the city – as a member agency – will follow the lead of the San Diego County Water Authority (SDCWA) and remain in a level 1 (water shortage watch). The SDCWA determined the region has sufficient supplies available to meet the region’s water supply needs.

Poway has been in a water shortage watch with voluntary water conservation measures since March 2017, following the last significant statewide drought. Poway’s water demands are down 23 percent when compared to 2013 water demands, and down 6 percent in comparison to 2017.

In addition to a watering schedule, other mandatory conservation measures include:

  • Prohibition on irrigating non-functional turf at commercial, industrial, and institutional properties (some exceptions apply).
  • All leaks must be repaired with 72 hours of notification by the City of Poway.
  • Ornamental fountains or similar water features that recirculate water are allowed but should not operate for more than six hours per day.

Pool covers are encouraged, but not required.
