[ARCHIVED] CERT Trains Volunteers to Assist Community in a Disaster

CERT_topstories.jpg

Want to be ready to help your community when disaster strikes? Poway is hosting an opportunity for volunteers to train to be a part of its Community Emergency Response Team (CERT). Training is free and runs 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays from Oct. 29 through Dec. 3 (no class on Nov. 26).

CERT is a nationwide program that educates individuals about disaster preparedness and provides training in basic disaster response skills, such as fire safety, light search and rescue, team organization and disaster medical operations. San Diego County has more than 1,700 trained CERT volunteers.

Trained CERT volunteers play a critical role in assisting first responders when personnel and resources are stretched to the limit. The five-session training covers: disaster preparedness, fire safety, disaster medical operations, light search and rescue and much more.

For more information contact Susy Turnbull, Poway’s disaster preparedness coordinator, at sturnbull@poway.org or 858-668-4474.
