The Sheriff’s Poway Station is sharing a new safety flyer for Poway residents that includes trends observed by law enforcement regarding home burglaries and tips for protecting your home.

According to Sheriff’s detectives, homes targeted are often backed up against green belts, golf courses, nature preserves and access roads. Suspects choose residences that appear to be “secondary” homes, or homes that appear to be unoccupied (such as the owners are away on vacation).

Surveillance cameras and lighting can both be key to protecting your home, but there are other steps such as making sure all doors are locked and installing security screens on glass windows.

Residents and businesses can partner with the Sheriff’s department to share access to their live or recorded video to benefit investigations or track crimes in real time through the Safe Poway program. Safe Poway uses a combination of prominently placed Sheriff’s cameras in public areas and a registry of private cameras to deter criminal activity, assist with investigation and improve the efficiency of response calls.
