The City of Poway is proud to announce the appointment of Eric Heidemann as Public Works Director. Heidemann began working for the city in 2009 as a Senior Management Analyst in the City Manager’s Office. He was promoted to operations manager for Public Works and then was named assistant director in 2017.
“The past few months afforded me the opportunity to get to know Eric and learn his leadership and management philosophies,” said Poway City Manager Chris Hazeltine. “I learned he is a true public servant and tireless supporter of his fellow public works employees. Those are two qualities I greatly admire. Eric is extremely competent, and I have full faith in his ability to lead the department and provide excellent public service.”
The Poway Public Works department is organized across two divisions: Utility Systems and Maintenance Operations. It has 79 full-time employees and an annual FY 2019-17 operating budget of close to $44 million. Public Works employees are responsible for ensuring the reliable operation and maintenance of public infrastructure, including:
- Compliance with State and Federal regulations for water treatment, water distribution, wastewater, reclaimed water, storm water, flood control, solid waste and household hazardous waste, and fleet operations;
- Maintaining public facilities, streets, medians, sidewalks and signage;
- Caring for parks, trails and open space;
- The functioning of traffic signals and street lights; and
- Administration of special districts.
“I am grateful for the opportunity to serve the City of Poway in this new role and excited to lead a talented group of public works employees as we continue to maintain the City’s vital infrastructure,” said Heidemann.
Heidemann has 22 years of local government experience. Prior to moving to and working for the City of Poway, he was the assistant town manager for the Town of Avon (Colorado). He is a graduate of the University of Arizona, with a bachelor’s degree in business and master’s degree in urban planning.
The annual salary range for the position of public works director is $151,980 and $184,716.
