State Fishing Licenses are no longer required to fish Lake Poway. There is a 2 rod limit for each angler. All other California Department of Fish & Game freshwater rules remain in effect. Fishing Permits are still required.
Year-round fishing is available for several species of fish including trout, bass, catfish, sunfish and bluegill. There are two primary fishing seasons at Lake Poway, Trout season and Catfish season. You can fish from shore or from a rental boat. Lake Poway offers a fish cleaning station and restroom facilities. Bait, tackle, lake permits and delicious food items and refreshments are available at the Lake Poway Grill & Tackle.
Trout SeasonBack by popular demand, Lake Poway has contracted with Chaulk Mound Trout Ranch in Nebraska to ship in the finest trout in Southern California. These fish have been dubbed “tail walking” because of their breathtaking, above-water spectacle seen when the fish seem to walk on water as you reel them in. The fishing frenzy begins in early November and continues through mid-April. The Lake is generally stocked every two weeks throughout the season. The specific stocking schedule for the current season is located below on this page. There are two major events during trout season. The first Saturday of February is the annual free Youth Fishing Derby (see below for a slideshow of this years Derby). In early March we host the annual two-day Open Fishing Derby.
Catfish Season Lake Poway stocks catfish and offers night fishing from early June through early August. The Lake is regularly stocked with channel catfish, approximately 1,000 pounds per stock and additional pounds for the annual Midnight Catfish Craze derby.
