Poway Named Among the 50 Safest Cities in California

Safest City Badge 2018

The City of Poway was the only San Diego County city to earn a spot on the SafeWise “50 Safest Cities in California” list for 2018. Poway was listed at #37 in the annual report by SafeWise, an organization that rates the 50 safest cities in states around the country. The 50 Safest Cities in California list is based on FBI crime data and population statistics.

“Our City Council and management team always keep public safety as our highest priority, but it is our deputies who deserve the credit for our #1 standing in the county,” Poway Mayor Steve Vaus said. “Day in and day out they keep this community out of harm's way and for that we are incredibly grateful.”

SafeWise security analyst Alexia Chianis said: “We were impressed to find California’s fifty safest cities reported an average of just one violent crime for every 1,000 people — that’s 80 percent lower than the US average, according to the most recent FBI crime report. Property crime rates were also quite low, with well over half of the cities reporting fewer than twenty crimes of this type per 1,000 people.”

Incorporated in 1980, the City of Poway is home to nearly 50,000 residents. “The City in the Country” is known for its safety, fiscal management, natural beauty, commitment to open space and recreational opportunities and a thriving business sector. The community offers a diverse range of housing options, an outstanding school district, a business park with more than 19,000 jobs, a broad range of dining and shopping opportunities, beautiful parks, over 55 miles of trails, 50 community events each year, and more.
