When the Poway Community Swim Center closes on Dec. 9 for maintenance, it won’t be a typical winter closure. City Council gave final approval last month for critical mechanical repairs and required renovations necessary to keep the swim center, built in 1989, operational and code compliant.
The project includes multiple construction phases, which is expected to extend the pool’s closure through the spring. Swim lessons and other aquatic programs will not be available during this time.
One phase of the project includes replacing the concrete deck, pool plaster and tile, and three-meter dive platform. Other phases include extensive work on the pool’s mechanical system, replacing the wading pool (which has been closed) with a water play area, relocating the administrative offices to improve the entrance for pool users, as well as code-required renovations for locker room and family changing areas.
The swim center is open regular hours through Friday, Dec. 8. The City will post construction updates on the swim center webpage and on its social media channels (Facebook, Twitter, and Nextdoor).
