Gwynn Memorial Realized Through Team Effort

TG-donors-TS

The statue honoring Poway resident and baseball legend Tony Gwynn will soon be starting its 1,350-mile journey from the Texas studio in which it was created to its final home overlooking the ballfield at Lake Poway.

The dedication ceremony on Tuesday, May 9 (Gwynn’s birthday) is not only a celebration of his legacy, but also a commemoration of a true team effort from beginning to end. Poway residents, baseball fans and businesses donated $190,324 to turn this dream into a reality and 15 companies donated materials and labor valuing $108,000 to construct the memorial plaza itself.

Individual donations ranged from $5 to $25,000.  The largest cash donation was $25,000 from Alexander Pellegrino and Alexander Favelukis of Sequoian investments. Swinerton Builders was the largest in-kind donor, contributing more than $25,000 worth of construction materials and labor.

Cliff and Inga Sandberg from Rockford, Illinois, who donated $50, earned the honors for the farthest traveled donation within the continental states. The farthest traveled donation overall was as part of a “family affair.” Dick and Pat Shope of Poway attended the fundraising concert last year and subsequently donated to earn a spot on the memorial wall. They were joined by other family members, including Carl and Parrish Glass who were stationed at a military base in Japan.

While 18 companies from both Poway and around San Diego County donated towards the memorial, the vast majority (213 total) were from individuals. Close to 60 percent of those donations were from Poway residents.

While each and every donation was valued, one of the most endearing ones came from the families of the Poway Padres, a special needs softball team. Seventeen families pooled their individual donations to raise $1,000. They dedicated their spot on the memorial wall to their coach, Tony Rubino.
