New Excavator Aides Storm Water Preparation

Public Works’ successful response to the January storms started well before the rains hit. The city annually completes an extensive series of steps to maintain its storm water system. Thanks to a new “member” of their team, Public Works was readier than ever to handle what mother nature dished out.

Each year the city has a small window of time (October to December) when environmental permits allow maintenance work in channels. This past fall, the city debuted a new track excavator with a forestry mower attachment. This essential piece of equipment was specifically configured to help the storm water crews balance storm preparedness with environmentally enhancing the channels.

The new equipment allows the crews to be more efficient in their work.

“It allows us to improve the habitat by trimming the healthy vegetation, reducing vegetation that is a fire risk and removing trash,” said Storm Water Supervisor Kevin Quinn. “We have an opportunity to use our resources and skills to serve Poway.”
